Chart Extractor
Get the data behind charts and tables on web pages as a clean CSV for Datawrapper or Flourish. No install: it’s a bookmark.
Can’t see the bar? Press ⌘ Shift B (Mac) or Ctrl Shift B (Windows).
Dragging doesn’t work? , then add a new bookmark (right-click the bookmarks bar → Add page…), name it “Get chart data” and paste the code as its URL.
Can install Chrome extensions? Download the extension (v2.31.0) instead — how to install it.
How to use it
- Open a page with a chart: a stock page, an index, a commodity, a data story.
- Click Get chart data in your bookmarks bar. A Chart Extractor panel docks on the right of the page with the charts it found, and outlines the one you pick. Use ⇆ to move it to the other side, – to tuck it away, × to close.
- Pick the chart, tick the columns you want and check the preview.
- Copy CSV, Download .csv, or Send to Datawrapper (copies the CSV and opens The Age’s Datawrapper “create a chart” page: click in the data box and paste).
Nothing found? It automatically looks for tables and other data on the page too.
Where it works
Checked on Trading Economics, Yahoo Finance, Google Finance, S&P Global, TradingView, Finviz, Coinbase, CoinMarketCap, Swyftx, Morningstar, Our World in Data, Rubberdesk and AFR company pages, plus pages built with common charting tools (Highcharts, Chart.js, Plotly, ECharts, Recharts, D3 and others). It runs in your own tab, so pages you’re logged in to work too.
If clicking the bookmark does nothing
Some sites, including Google Finance, block bookmarks from running. Run the same thing from Chrome’s console instead:
- .
- On the chart page, open the console: ⌥ ⌘ J (Mac) or Ctrl Shift J (Windows).
- Paste and press Enter. The first time, Chrome asks you to type allow pasting before it accepts pasted code.
Embedded charts (a Datawrapper or Flourish chart inside an article) can’t be reached from the article; open the chart itself (its own link) and use the bookmark there.
A few sites block bookmarks like this one. The browser extension version, if you can install it, handles those (download it below).
Already have a file?
Open the Chart Extractor panel to import an Excel, CSV or JSON file (for example Morningstar’s multi-sheet export) and turn it into one clean table.
Prefer the Chrome extension?
If your browser lets you install extensions, the extension does the same job from the toolbar, adds a right-click “Extract data from this chart or table”, and pastes straight into Datawrapper.
- Download the extension (v2.31.0) and unzip it.
- Open
chrome://extensionsand turn on Developer mode (top right). - Click Load unpacked and choose the unzipped folder.
- Pin it from the puzzle-piece menu so it shows in the toolbar. To update, download again, replace the folder and click the reload arrow on the extension’s card.
Privacy
Everything happens in your browser. The bookmark reads the chart on the page you’re looking at and hands it to the Chart Extractor panel; nothing is sent to this site or anywhere else.
